2. The Legend of Yellow Crane Tower
Legend has it that Yellow Crane Tower was built by the family of an old teahouse owner named Lao Xin in Wuhan. One day, a ragged Taoist priest came to the teahouse asking for wine. Lao Xin ignored him, but his son generously gave the priest some wine without asking for anything in return. Over the next six months, the priest became a frequent visitor to the teahouse. One day, the Taoist told Lao Xin’s son that to repay his kindness, he wished to paint a crane on the teahouse wall. This crane would dance at his command. Word spread throughout the city, drawing crowds to the teahouse to witness the crane’s dance. The Lao Xin family grew wealthy as a result. To express their gratitude to the Taoist, they built the Yellow Crane Tower.

3. The History of Yellow Crane Tower
The history of Yellow Crane Tower is long and intricate, dating back to the Three Kingdoms period. Why was it built? Due to its strategic location, Sun Quan (182–252, King of Wu) established it as a military lookout tower. Centuries later, its military function faded into obscurity, and the tower came to be cherished primarily as a scenic landmark. During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), numerous poems extolled the tower, cementing its fame and drawing countless visitors. Over the following centuries, the tower endured destruction and reconstruction multiple times. In the Ming and Qing dynasties alone (1368–1644 and 1644–1911), it was destroyed seven times and rebuilt seven times. In 1884, the tower was destroyed by a major fire and remained in ruins until its reconstruction in 1981.

4. Architecture of Yellow Crane Tower
Yellow Crane Tower has featured distinct architectural styles across different dynasties. However, the tower standing today was constructed based on Qing Dynasty designs. How tall is Yellow Crane Tower? It stands at 51.4 meters (approximately 168 feet). Its appearance remains consistent from every angle. Its roof is covered with 100,000 pieces of yellow glazed tiles. The tiered, upward-curving eaves resemble a yellow crane spreading its wings to fly.

5. What attractions does Yellow Crane Tower offer?
Yellow Crane Tower provides visitors with a rich viewing experience. Each floor features distinct themes—for instance, the first floor showcases legendary tales. Its walls display a 9-meter-long, 6-meter-wide painted porcelain mural depicting clouds, rivers, and cranes, evoking a romantic atmosphere between heaven and earth. The third floor primarily exhibits poetry praising the tower throughout history. From the rooftop, visitors can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the Yangtze River, the Yangtze River Bridge, and the surrounding architecture of Wuhan. Outside the tower, visitors can also see a bronze sculpture of a yellow crane, a commemorative archway, and pavilions and towers.
