Furong Ancient Town

Furong Ancient Town, located about a 1.5-hour drive from Zhangjiajie, Hunan, is an ancient town with a history spanning more than 2,000 years. Surrounded by water on three sides and with a waterfall flowing through the town, it is known as the “Ancient Town of the Millennial Hanging Waterfall.” Its unique atmosphere, rich historical and cultural heritage, magnificent waterfall scenery, and enchanting night views attract countless visitors.

Furong Town is home to the Tujia and Miao peoples, both of whom are ethnic minorities in China. The town boasts a serene and peaceful atmosphere, with traditional Tujia stilt houses dotted along the banks of the waterfall. 1. Furong Waterfall
Furong Waterfall stands 60 meters (200 feet) tall and 40 meters (130 feet) wide. Located in the heart of Furong Ancient Town, it is a majestic and breathtaking sight, and the most striking attraction in the town. The Furong Waterfall Viewing Platform offers the best vantage point for viewing the waterfall. From there, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire ancient town. The roaring waterfall, with water spraying in all directions, resembles a magnificent painting. Especially at night, when the lights come on, the waterfall becomes even more enchanting, making visitors feel as if they have stepped into a fairyland.

2. Tusi Palace
Tusi Palace is a landmark building in Furong Town, perched atop a cliff. Thousands of years ago, it served as the summer retreat of the Tusi kings. With its unique architectural style and entirely wooden structure, it stands as a masterpiece and marvel of Tujia architecture. The palace houses precious artifacts from various dynasties of the Tujia people, showcasing their 5,000-year-old historical heritage. As night falls and the lights come on, the entire palace resembles a dazzling throne.

3. The Five-Li Stone Slab Street
The Five-Li Stone Slab Street is the oldest street in Furong Town. Stretching approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) in length and only 2–3 meters (7–10 feet) wide, it is paved with smooth stone slabs and runs through the entire town. Lined on both sides by century-old houses and shops, the street features eaves that sweep upward and corners that curve upward, extending all the way to the pier.

4. Tuwang Bridge
With its distinctive five-arch stone structure and wooden walkway, Tuwang Bridge showcases the charm of traditional Tujia architecture. It not only connects the ancient town with the outside world but also offers the best vantage point for admiring the panoramic view of the cluster of stilt houses.

5. Xizhou Bronze Pillars
Currently housed in the Folk Customs and Scenery Museum, the Xizhou Bronze Pillar features a circular base and an octagonal top. The pillar is 15 centimeters (6 inches) wide on each side and 39 centimeters (15 inches) in diameter. Aside from damage to the top, the rest of the pillar is well-preserved. More than 2,600 characters of inscriptions are engraved on its eight sides. This bronze pillar is regarded as a sacred object by the local Tujia people and holds significant cultural importance.

6. Tujia Ancestral Cave Site
The Tujia Ancestral Cave Site, located below the Furong Waterfall, served as an early settlement for the Tujia people and could accommodate thousands of people. In addition to the cave itself, the site preserves a wealth of cultural relics and exhibits. Here, visitors can admire traditional Tujia clothing, farming tools, and daily necessities, gaining insight into the wisdom and creativity of the Tujia people.
