Suzhou Travel Guide

Suzhou is located in southern Jiangsu Province, nestled in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta. It borders Shanghai to the east, Zhejiang Province to the south, Wuxi City to the west, and is bordered by the Yangtze River to the north. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal runs north-south through Suzhou. With water covering 42% of its area and numerous ponds and streams, it is hailed as the “Venice of the East.” Founded in 514 BC, Suzhou is an ancient city with over 2,500 years of history and abundant historical sites. The ancient city’s charm endures to this day. Its dual grid layout, where streets and canals run parallel, remains perfectly preserved. With its pleasant climate, Suzhou is a desirable tourist destination year-round. Whether exploring the picturesque water towns nearby or strolling through the exquisite classical gardens in the city center, you’ll experience the allure of this “paradise on earth.” As the saying goes: “Among the gardens of Jiangnan, Suzhou’s are the finest.” Suzhou’s gardens are celebrated not only for their sheer number but also for their enchanting natural scenery and harmonious architectural design. Today, over 60 well-preserved gardens remain within Suzhou’s city limits, some of which have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Transportation

Suzhou does not have an airport; travelers are advised to use nearby Shanghai Pudong International Airport or Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. Suzhou boasts excellent rail connections with four major train stations. Frequent high-speed trains operate between Suzhou and Shanghai, completing the journey in just 30 minutes. The metro system and convenient city buses can take visitors to most attractions within the city.

Meals

During your travels, savoring local cuisine is an absolute must. Suzhou cuisine belongs to the Jiangsu culinary tradition, one of China’s eight major culinary schools. Its distinctive sweet flavors and exquisite presentation make it widely beloved. At Guanqian Street, you can sample authentic local specialties and snacks. The delicious food and warm hospitality will surely leave you with unforgettable memories.

Nightlife

Suzhou’s nightlife is far quieter and more leisurely than that of major cities like Beijing or Shanghai. As night falls, you can admire the enchanting scenery of Shantang Street, take a boat ride along Shantang River, or savor tea in a teahouse while enjoying local Kunqu opera and Pingtan storytelling performances. While bars do exist, the atmosphere of traditional culture remains deeply ingrained.

Culture

The city is the cradle of Chinese Wu Culture. Many great names and schools of art arose here. For example, the Wumen Fine Arts School is the finest in the city’s history. Pingtan, Kun Opera and Suzhou Opera are praised as ‘the three flowers’ in the cultural history of the city. Furthermore, embroidery, fans and brocade produced here are noted worldwide.
