Xiamen Travel Guide
Xiamen Travel Guide
Xiamen, located on China’s southeastern coast in southwestern Fujian Province, is a coastal city that blends natural beauty with modern vitality. The city administers six districts: Siming, Haicang, Huli, Jimei, Tong’an, and Xiang’an.
As one of China’s earliest Special Economic Zones, Xiamen played a pivotal role in the nation’s reform and opening-up. The city primarily comprises Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island, the northern banks of the Jiulong River, and Tong’an District, connected to the mainland via the Xiamen Bridge and Gaoji Seawall.
Xiamen is renowned for its captivating coastline, unique island scenery, and livable environment. With its spring-like climate year-round and fresh air, it is celebrated as the “Egret Island” due to its habitat for hundreds of thousands of egrets. Beyond its natural beauty, Xiamen boasts rich cultural heritage—from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Gulangyu Island to the South Seas-inspired Jimei Academy Village, from the romantic coastal views along Huan Dao Road to the vibrant Zengcuo’an Art District. Every corner of Xiamen blends maritime culture with modern urban charm.
Today, Xiamen stands as an open gateway connecting China to the world, celebrated as “China’s most beautiful maritime garden city.”

Transportation

Xiamen’s transportation system has developed into a multidimensional network encompassing aviation, railways, highways, waterways, and urban rail transit, establishing a comprehensive transportation framework that connects both internal and external regions. Construction of Xiamen’s new airport is advancing comprehensively. The city now serves 122 cities via 175 air routes, ranking 13th nationally in passenger throughput and 5th in international passenger transfers. A rail network anchored by the Xiamen-Shenzhen, Longyan-Xiamen, and Fuzhou-Xiamen railways has been established, with an operational mileage of 146 kilometers covering key freight hubs like Haicang Port and Dongdu Port.
The metro system, comprising Lines 1, 2, and 3, forms the backbone network. With 417 bus routes, the citywide public transport system seamlessly connects with the metro, complemented by new services such as intercity buses and micro-loop buses.
Meals
Xiamen cuisine stands as a premier representative of Fujian cuisine, renowned throughout China. Beyond local dishes, the city offers culinary delights from across the nation, making it an ideal destination for food enthusiasts. Characterized by its fresh, delicate, light, crispy, and subtly spicy flavors, Xiamen cuisine is particularly celebrated for its steamed shrimp and seafood, famed for their unparalleled freshness.
When traveling, don’t miss out on the local snacks—they come in a wide variety with distinct flavors. Tusun Dong is made from a seafood called “star worms,” served with a sauce and condiments like vinegar, chili, ketchup, mustard, and garlic. Peanut soup is simply made from peanuts, but its preparation is quite intricate. It has a sweet taste and pairs perfectly with some dim sum like fried dough sticks or steamed buns. Many consider the peanut soup served at Huangzehe Restaurant on Zhongshan Road to be the best. Spring rolls are a classic Hakka dish—deep-fried rolls filled with assorted vegetables, meats, and seafood slices. The area boasts numerous famous and delicious snacks, including Xiamen pancakes, oyster cakes, zongzi (rice dumplings), and satay noodles.

Nightlife

Whether you’re a foodie on the hunt for delicacies or a trendsetter who loves to shop, Xiamen’s night markets have something for everyone. For travelers, here are some popular night markets worth experiencing: Zhongshan Road Night Market, Zengcuoan Night Market, Gulangyu Night Market, Jimei Academy Village Night Market, and Hubin South Road Night Market.
