Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Located just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was built to mimic the natural habitat of the giant panda and is designed to provide the best possible environment for keeping and breeding pandas. It is home to one of the most popular panda stars with millions of fans.

Giant pandas are not only a national treasure of China, they are also loved by people all over the world. They are only found in three provinces, Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu, totaling less than 2,000 pandas worldwide, of which 70% are found in Sichuan Province. Therefore, whenever tourists from home and abroad come to Chengdu, Sichuan, witnessing this lovely animal is one of their main objectives.

The base also takes care of other rare and endangered wildlife and covers an area of 560 mu (92 acres), 96% of which is green space. Giant pandas, red pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks, and more than 20 species of rare animals are kept and bred here. Bamboos, flowers, fresh air, natural mountain scenery and beautiful man-made landscapes are skillfully blended together at the base.

The necessary facilities have been completed, including a feed store, dormitories and a medical station. There is also a museum, a research laboratory and a training center.

To meet the dietary and habitat needs of the giant pandas, the base has planted a large number of plants and cultivated as many as 10,000 clumps of bamboo and shrubs. The base plans to expand by another 3,000 acres (500 acres) of land to simulate a natural environment in preparation for the release of giant pandas into the wild.

The Giant Panda Museum opened in 1993 to further science education and raise public awareness of the protection of wildlife and its environment. It is the world’s only thematic museum for rare and endangered animals. The three main exhibitions are located in the Giant Panda Museum, the Butterfly Museum and the Vertebrate Museum. The exhibits include a variety of rare pictures, more than 800 materials, and more than 2,140 different specimens collected in Sichuan, including animal, bird, amphibian, reptile and insect specimens as well as fossils and models. Resources in the museum collection include up to 10,000 specimens and thousands of books and documents. This excellent and comprehensive museum provides an excellent venue for all those interested in learning about the spread and conservation of the region’s natural biodiversity.
