January
January Destinations in China
January is the coldest month in China, and the travel theme for this month is mainly related to snow and ice.
You can experience stunning winter scenery and ski resorts in northern China such as Harbin, Beijing and Changbai Mountain. The annual Harbin Ice and Snow Festival will officially open on January 5 and last until late February.
Yunnan and Sanya have become favorites for those who enjoy warm winter vacations.

1. Harbin - the charm of minus 20 degrees Celsius
■Average January Temperature: -24–13°C (-11-9°F)
■Located in northeastern China, Harbin hosts the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival every January. It’s like a crystalline wonderland with ice palaces, famous characters, cute animals and more.
■World-famous landmarks such as the Great Wall and Disney Castle are carved out of ice and snow and lit up with colorful lights.
■Skiing is another popular activity. Harbin boasts one of the best ski resorts in China – Yabuli Ski Resort. Stay three nights at Club Med Yabuli Resort and enjoy an all-inclusive ski vacation with your family.

2. Beijing - Chinese New Year traditional temple fair
In winter, Beijing is exceptionally peaceful with fewer tourists, which will make you feel calmer and more profound when visiting the historical sites (Forbidden City, Great Wall, Summer Palace, etc.).
During the Spring Festival, many people will visit Beijing’s traditional temple fairs for blessing ceremonies, entertainment, snacks and handicrafts. This is a great opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions.

3. Jilin -Changbai Mountain - freezing fog and skiing
■Average temperature in January: -24°C-2°C (-11°F-36°F)
The freezing fog in Jilin is one of China’s four great natural wonders, along with the Guilin Karst, the Yunnan Stone Forest and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. If you enjoy photography and are in search of magnificent winter scenery, the freezing fog in Jilin is not to be missed.
■Although the Songhua River freezes over in winter, the temperature of the water underneath the ice remains around 4 degrees Celsius. The huge temperature difference causes a lot of fog to form on the river, which eventually turns into freezing fog and hangs on the trees on both sides of the river.
■The best time to see freezing fog is from December to late February, and the Freezing Fog and Ice Festival is held in mid-January every year.
■Skiing is another major tourist theme in Jilin, and the best ski resorts are Changbai Mountain Tourist Resort, Beidahu Ski Resort, Songhua Lake Ski Resort, and Vermilion Mountain Ski Resort.

4. Sanya - Sunny Beach Time
■Average January Temperature: 20-27°C (68-81°F)
■Sanya is located in the tropics, where the “winter” is sunny, the sea is blue, the skies are clear, the beaches are soft and the climate is warm.
■There, you can sunbathe on private beaches, do water sports such as surfing, snorkeling, swimming and motorboat rides, and enjoy rainforest spas at nightfall while listening to the evening chorus of birds.
